Rembrandt, Madonna, Buddhist Art, van Gogh, Nick Brandt & more!

By Mirela Roncevic -- Library Journal, 08/15/2009

Although the recession continues to permeate every pore of American business, it doesn't seem to have hit art book publishing—yet. Against all expectations, high-end scholarly publications, exhibition catalogs, and monographs on individual artists—a few with shockingly high price tags—are still being produced in staggering numbers, particularly by major North American museums and Western European publishers and art foundations. Of course, many of these books were already in production when the recession came along, but anyone charged with reviewing or purchasing art books must struggle to keep up with the sheer volume.

In fact, it seems that the art book industry has been going through a renaissance. It's not just the quantity of books being published but also the quality. Reproductions have improved in recent years, thanks to new printing technologies, making the art featured more vivid than ever. Contemporary art is finally getting the attention it deserves, and there has been a renewed interest in fashion, especially celebrity designers and early 20th-century haute couture, and in interior design. Most important, the definition of art continues to evolve as new forms of digital expression emerge and as popular culture—particularly film and music—persists in shaping our visual take on the world.

This is all good news. But with librarians facing decreased budgets and staff, the bubble could soon burst. If libraries cut back, who will buy the expensive art books that the general population can no longer afford?

As the recession continues, says LJ art book reviewer Cheryl Ann Lajos (Free Lib. of Philadelphia), “public librarians will wrestle with balancing the wants of patrons against the needs of the communities served...whereas academic librarians will focus upon...supporting their institutions....” LJ reviewer Russell Clement (Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL) concurs, adding that “fewer research libraries currently have adequate funds for building comprehensive art collections, and the few.... with substantial dedicated endowments continue to carry the load via interlibrary loan.”

More ILL? Shared collection building? Librarians will be looking for creative solutions to meet art book needs. And they'll be more rigorous than ever in judging art books. The titles that follow aim to help librarians zero in on what's outstanding this fall, while celebrating the growing diversity of subjects. Starred () titles are essential.
