García-Febo Elected REFORMA Vice President
Loida García-Febo has been elected vice president/president-elect 2009–10 of REFORMA, the National Association To Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. The results were announced on June 24, right before the 2008 American Library Association (ALA) annual conference in Anaheim, CA.

Editor Adriana Domínguez’s layoff from Rayo’s children’s division has left the Spanish-language book industry scratching their heads. With recent reports about a Hispanic baby boom, it seemed Domínguez’s high-profile Spanish-language and bilingual book projects were becoming an industry staple.

NEA Launches The Big Read Mexico
This fall, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will launch The Big Read Mexico, part of the larger The Big Read program, the largest literature program in the United States. The Big Read Mexico will launch with the anthology Sol, piedras y sombras. Veinte cuentistas Mexicanos de la primera mitad del siglo XX (Sun, Stone, and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories).

Antonio Orlando Rodríguez—No Small Feat |
Antonio Orlando Rodríguez, the Cuban novelist who won this year’s Premio Alfaguara de Novela, has been traveling nonstop. His book tour brought him to New York City this past May, where he met with reporters eager to interview him on his latest accomplishment. Then, the Instituto Cervantes. (The event was moderated by his friend and translator, the author Ernesto Mestre-Reed.) Rodríguez kept his audience mesmerized with stories and pictures of the real Espiridiona Cenda, the tiny, turn-of-the-century woman who inspired his award-winning novel, Chiquita (Alfaguara). Not surprisingly, after the evening wrapped up, all
those present immediately lined up to greet the author and have him sign their books.
