Speak out: Human Rights of Immigrants
March 28, 2008

I am attending PLA 12th National Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Yesterday, I spoke at a program discussing how new immigration laws are affecting library services to new americans in the USA. I have to limit this entry to a few paragraphs (posting from a computer at the CyberCenter). For handouts and more information go to www.pla.org and look for the title of the program. All the handouts should be availalbe this coming week!

***The lack of a structured immigration reform at a national level has resulted in more than 1,500 different proposed resolutions. These have been developed by states all over the country and are mainly about education, IDs and business. For one, the resolutions about ID can and are affecting libraries around the nation.
Example: your library receives funds from the county. The county passes a resolution about requiring IDs to obtain public services. Libraries in that county are forced to required valid forms of ID established by the county resolution= immigrants in the county might not be able to  provide IDs to obtain a library card.

This is a matter of immigrants and their human rights- this means take
Action! It is a matter of ensuring access to information. Librarians are answering the call.  Still, there is so much to be done! We need each one of you.
