Día de los niños, los libros, & los videos
April 24, 2008
The big weekend is upon us. Maybe you'll capture some Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros action on video. If you do, why not put it up for all the world to see? Here are couple examples of folks who have done that.
In Covington, KY seven library systems in Ohio and Kentucky will get together for a big celebration that will include storytelling in, get this, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Punjabi, Arabic, and Turkish as well as Spanish & English. Here is the half-minute TV spot promoting Sunday's big event:
From up in the city of Allen, Texas comes splendid footage of a Día celebration--showing a storyteller, face painting, the whole bit--that coincided with the unveiling of an extraordinary library children's mural given by the family of superlibrarian and longtime friend of us all Solina Marquis. Solina's contributions to the world of multicultural library services are legend. She has helped a lot of us, in her wise and wonderful way, find good answers to questions about not only librarianship but also about children and parenting. This 10-minute professionally produced video includes a narrated panoramic tour of the library mural. The artwork is dedicated to the memory of young Jeannette Lorraine Marquis--Solina's daughter.
As the video notes remind us, the "Day of the Child (Día de los niños) holiday is honored all over Latin America as a way of recognizing that children are a blessing to society." Nobody knows that better than Solina.
