REFORMA @ 2008 National Library Legislative Day
May 15, 2008
This week, librarians descended on Capitol Hill. We took all our energy and passion about various issues affecting our customers and our librarians, and put it into action.
The Legislative Committee of REFORMA presented the Legislator of the Year Award to Congressman Raul Grijalva “For his years of dedication to library service for Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking.”
The Chair of the Committee, and ALA Past-President, Carol Brey-Casiano, scheduled visits to a number of representatives to ask for support for various bills and resolutions including the following:
Appropriations
School Libraries No Child Left Behind/ the SKILLS Act
Copyrights: Orphan Works Legislation
Telecommunications and E-Rate Issues (including Internet safety education, Broadband and Network Neutrality)
Open Government and Access to Government Information
How can you help?
We need to take immediate action about the New Employment Verification Act H.R. 5515
Please, send letters to your Congressman about this issue A.S.A.P.
This was my first time at a National Library Legislative Day and I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting is to speak to Congressmen in the House. I was no longer only a writer; I was sharing my concerns in person with elected officials who actually took time from their busy agendas to meet with my colleagues and I.
My group included: Carol Brey-Casiano, Camila Alire (ALA President-Elect), Mario Ascencio (REFORMA President), Jacqueline Ayala (REFORMA), Sandy Schuckett (REFORMA), Maribel Garza-Castro (School Librarian from TLA), Albert Tovar (Library Director from TLA), Gloria Maraz from TLA.
I hope to see many of you in Washington D.C. in 2009!
