Mind the gap: bridging the inter-generational divide to future-proof the profession
July 18, 2008
New Librarians and library decision-makers of the world take note: IFLA/ New Professionals Discussion Group will host a unique program at the IFLA Congress in Quebec.
Title: Mind the gap: bridging the inter-generational divide to future-proof the profession
Description:
The last decade has intensified the discourse of what competencies are needed for libraries to meet the information demands and expectancies of their users. Many new professionals are potentially aware of their own market value but do they interact with the associations and organizations which the previous generation of librarians invested their time and energy in, be these trade unions, single member associations (e.g. CILIP) or associations for institutions or a combination.
Speakers will address issues such as
- How has your association addressed the issue of sustaining its membership and attracting new members?
- What do you the think the average student, graduate of new professional thinks about their national library associations?
- How can your association attract new professionals to its organization and what do you do to interact with the new generation?
- What do you think is the most important challenge for your organization over the next decade?
Panelists include:
Keith Michael Fiels, ALA Executive Director (USA)
Sue Hutley, ALIA Executive Director (Australia)
Barbara Schleihagen, DEV Executive Director (Germany)
IFLA's New Professional Discussion Group (NPDG) was established in August of 2004 at IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The group seeks to broaden the involvement of recently qualified professionals in IFLA, its core values and professional priorities. Currently, more than 400 people from around the globe have joined the NPDG list-serve. Within IFLA, the NPDG is hosted by the Management of Library Associations Section. Currently, NPDG convenors are Loida Garcia-Febo (US/PR), Joanna Ball (UK), Andrew Cranfield (DK/UK), Liz Lewis (UK), and Robyn Ellard (AUS).
