Ron Rodríguez, Librarian of the Year
March 13, 2008
Yesterday REFORMA (the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to
Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking) recognized Ron Rodríguez as the 2008 Librarian of the Year.
The award, named for the organization’s admirable founder, Dr. Arnulfo Trejo, each year acknowledges the work of an innovative and dedicated public servant. The list of past honorees is peopled by truly exemplary leading lights of the library world.
Rodríguez is at Cal State Fullerton’s forward-looking Pollak Library. He has been busy for decades in Orange County opening up pathways to library services for all, and the OC is a better place for it. He served as REFORMA’s president, back in th’ day, nearly 20 years ago.
Like a lot of his students nowadays at Cal State, Rodríguez before he got there spent a lot of time in junior college libraries. A taste of his service ethic is in the essential book Library Services to Latinos. Hearing yesterday’s news inspired me to re-read Ron Rodríguez’s section of that book again, and you know what? I‘m glad that I did..
