New Law recognizes the cultural and historic contributions of Latinos in the United States
May 21, 2008

Last May 8, the President signed the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 (S.2739) into a law. This includes legislation on the National Museum of the American Latino Act (H.R. 512/S.500) and the Cesar Estrada Chavez Study Act(H.R. 359/S.327).

The law allows  the creation of various projects to promote Latino culture and contributions to the USA at a more national level.

  • The National Museum of the American Latino Act would establish and fund a federal commission to explore the viability of creating the "National Museum of the American Latino" in Washington, DC.

Congressman Xavier Becerra, sponsor of H.R. 512, said:

Now that the legislation is law, a 23 member commission will soon be formed to study the feasibility of and plan for a new national museum in the nation’s capital that is dedicated to portraying the art, history, and culture of the Latino population of the United States.

Specifically, the commission will be charged with producing three things: one, a national conference to bring stakeholders, experts, policymakers and other interested parties together to discuss the museum’s viability; two, a fundraising plan to create an extensive public-private partnership; and three, a report to Congress detailing a recommended plan of action on how to move forward with taking the museum from concept to reality. You can read more about the process in the bill summary.

  • The Cesar Estrada Chávez Study Act would authorize the U.S. Department of Interior to study lands important in the life of Cesar Chávez for possible inclusion into the National Park System and would recognize the historical contributions of one of our most prominent Latino leaders.

It will be a beautiful day when we can visit the National Museum of the American Latino at the National Mall. I cannot wait until Latinos have their own Museum to share our culture, history, and contributions with the world!

Expect more news about this new law…
