Book Fairs on the Agenda
January 30, 2008
I just read an article in The Economist where this company declared that in fact, the market for books in Spanish is thought to be the second-largest in the world. Furthermore, it is the biggest (market) for books in translation, which account for about a fifth of the 120,000 Spanish titles published each year. With sales up by 7.5% in 2005—growth is strongest in Argentina, Mexico and Colombia—it is expanding faster than many other book markets.
The article was published at a time when libraries are considering whether to send staff to select materials in Spanish to the largest book fairs. If your library is going through this process, here are links that might help you take an informed decision:
Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogota (Bogota International Book Fair)
April 23 – May 5
Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires International Book Fair)
April 21 – May 12
LIBER. Feria Internacional del Libro (LIBER. International Book Fair)
September 27-29

Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair)
November 29 - December 7

My advice: these book fairs provide the hottest, out-of-the-press materials in Spanish, therefore they are the best vehicle to select resources for our libraries.
