So Snoopy was Hispanic
September 14, 2008

Alas, yet another great Latino talent in the arts passed away recently (see my last blog on Ed Vega). His name was Jose Cuautemoc "Bill" Melendez and he was the very "voice" (eh, bark or yelp?) of Snoopy, that snarky dog we all grew up with. “The Peanuts” animator worked on several of the award-winning Peanuts specials such as "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Melendez also animated "Garfield on the Town," "Cathy," "Babar Comes to America," and "The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe," among others. Born Jose Cuautemoc in 1916 in Sonora, Mexico, his family moved to Arizona in 1928 and then to Los Angeles in the early 1930s. He was also the voice of that little yellow bird with the funny hairdo, Woodstock. He was 91.

The real Joe Cool: The late Jose Cuautemoc "Bill" Melendez.
