Gr 2-5–With full-page, mixed-media illustrations that play a vital role in telling the stories, these titles provide a great opportunity for children to explore the lives and work of these famous Spanish artist and poets. In Me llamo Salvador Dalí, Aguilar uses several of the famed artist’s most recognized images as building blocks to construct his own illustrations and story. Here, Dalí is six years-old and lives in a dream world. And it is through his imagination and art that he saves the king’s daughter from a mad scientist. A brief biography of the artist is included at the end. It should be noted that the book’s title suggests that the story is in first person, but it is actually told in the third person. Both 4 poemas de Joan Manuel Serrat and 4 poemas de Alberti open with a biography of the poet, which is followed by four of his poems. Serrat’s book contains: “Mi niñez,” “Mediterráneo,” “Barquito de papel,” and “Aquellas pequeñas cosas.” Alberti’s book includes: “Si mi voz muriera en tierra,” “La niña que se va al mar,” “Cuba dentro de un piano,” and “Se equivocó la paloma.” At the end, Aguilar includes a story based on the poets’ dreams. It is important to note that there is a stereotypical illustration of a Mexican, portrayed in native clothing, with a big hat and a big mustache. Despite the mentioned shortcomings, these titles are recommended for school and public libraries.
