PreS-Gr 1–The six titles in this series combine brief text, rebuses, and colorful full-page photographs to elaborate on a variety of children’s favorite foods. All six begin with two pages that identify the rebuses used within, followed by nine two-page spreads dealing with differing aspects of each food. In the case of Ice Cream, for example, young readers will find ice cream sandwiches, bars, and cones, as well as sundaes and pie a la mode. Cake likewise looks at various types of cake (wedding cake, birthday cake, cupcakes), while Applesauce focuses on how to make it at home. Rhyme is employed in some cases, though not throughout the series. The accompanying photographs include appetizing close-ups of the foods and children of various ethnicities enjoying them. Each title closes with a brief glossary of potentially unfamiliar words. While the hardcover price may deter parents from buying these brief books for the home, they are certainly appropriate and sure to be useful for libraries serving young children, as well as early childhood education settings.
