Parents raising children often have to help them deal with issues such as rejection, jealousy, body image, and procrastination. Verità, an Italian psychologist who specializes in cognitive and behavioral therapy, has written a series of brief tales illustrating common problems facing children. Each story features an animal that has a problem, confronts it, and finds an effective solution. A brief introduction for parents shows them how to use the stories to help their children develop emotionally by replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts. The stories are easy for children to understand: a penguin who is upset because he cannot fly, a hippopotamus who thinks that she is too fat, a beaver who does not want to do any work. The messages are simple, too: accept that some things can change and some cannot; one cannot always have everything that one wants; the world is not a perfect place. A series of reproducible drawings at the back of the book are useful for reinforcing each lesson. Parents and teachers can give them to the children to color and write dialog for the characters. This is a good book for parents, teachers, and the children in their lives. Public and school libraries will surely want to add it to their collections; highly recommended.
