YA–An ambitious, fast-paced, at times over the top fantasy novel set in 20th-century Europe from the author of La emperatriz de los etéreos (“The Empress of the Ethereal Kingdom”; Alfaguara, 2007) and Memorias de Idún (“Memoirs of Idún”; SM, 2006), which has sold over 400,000 copies in Spain and been translated into several languages, as well as a dozen other novels. Originally from Valencia, Spain, 30-year-old Gallegos had been called the Spanish J.K. Rowling. When 16-year-oldCat’s father, an angel, is murdered by a demon, she sets out on a quest around the Old Continent to find the culprit and avenge her father’s death. Along the way, she develops and unlikely friendship with a young demon named Ángelo; is shocked to discover her mother’s true identity; and uncovers a plot to destroy the human race. Soon, Cat realizes that not all demons are evil and not all angels are kind. Though this novel is a bit too long and at times it’s hard to keep track of its many angels and demons, fans of fantasy and of Gallego will definitely enjoy it. Recommended for general YA collections and for libraries and bookstores where fantasy is popular.
