K-Gr 2–On the same day that Maya loses her first tooth, Otto loses his favorite socks. Although the two youngsters don’t meet until years later, they are connected by events in their lives. Maya becomes a dentist and Otto a sock designer. When Otto takes his dog, to the dentist because he has lost his teeth, he meets Maya and discovers that she is wearing a pair of socks he’s designed. Otto’s dog then decides to go to school to become an astronaut and travels to the moon. Upon his return, he discovers that the Earth has acquired the shape of a sock. A surreal but fun story with bright colorful illustrations that add to the fantastical feel. There is too much going on sometimes to be explained in a picture-book format, but Maya and Otto are dreamers, and this story feels like one of their dreams. While it won’t likely have wide appeal, this title is recommended as an additional purchase for larger collections.
