Teo en Palo Verde/ Teo in Palo Verde.

Reviewed by Cristi Jenkins, Access & Programs, Fort Vancouver Regional Library, WA -- Críticas, 7/15/2008

Del Rio, Adam.
tr. by Ernesto Guerrero. illus. by Noel Ill. U.S.: Lectura Books. 32p. glossary. ISBN 978-1-60448-000-9. $15.95.

PreS+–In the second installment in the award-winning series, Teo’s curiosity and compassion help him make meaningful connections in his new community. The boy and his family have moved to Palo Verde, where they can grow a garden and raise a goat. As he makes new friends, Teo discovers that an elderly healer and her granddaughter live in a small shack nearby and have little to eat. So when his father brings home a whole chicken, Teo shares it with them. Del Rio sets this story in Palo Verde, a once vibrant community that was leveled to build Dodger Stadium. Ill (2007 finalist for American Illustration) uses pen and acrylics to enhance this heartwarming story. His illustrations (pleasant rounded faces, clear facial expressions, an old moving truck, a goat eating grass on the side of the road) combined with light earth-tones, pastel greens, yellows, blues, and pinks create the sense of a small but happy rural community. Included in the book are a short, illustrated glossary of Spanish/English terms and a map of the original area. Each page contains both English and Spanish text. The translation is clear and strong. Readers will enjoy this story; recommended for public and school libraries, and bookstores.
