Sip, Slurp, Soup, Soup, Caldo, Caldo, Caldo

Reviewed by Ann Welton, Grant Center for the Expressive Arts, Tacoma, WA -- Críticas, 7/15/2008

Bertrand, Diane Gonzales.
tr. by Julia Mercedes Castilla. illus. by Alex Pardo DeLange. U.S.: Lorito Books: Piñata: Arte Público Press. 2008. unpaged. ISBN 978-098156861-4. $19.95. BOOK+CD (book published in 1997)

Gr 1-3–Another remarkable title in Piñata’s new bilingual imprint. This lengthy tale of one mother’s way of making a wonderful soup, enhanced by a trip to the store to get warm corn tortillas, is read by Kristine Klanderud in a slightly Munchkinesque child’s voice. However, she gets high marks for clarity and appropriate expression. The tiny voice also works well with the cartoonlike illustrations done in pen-and-ink and watercolors. Again, this kit would serve for ESL students as well as for younger children whose parents would like to expose them to Spanish. Recommended for public and school libraries.
