Now in its ninth edition, this practical guide provides current, comprehensive information about diabetes in simple language. The authors, a nurse–diabetes educator and a dietitian, explain the two types of diabetes along with their causes and symptoms. They then discuss hyper and hypoglycemia and the ideal and acceptable ranges for blood sugar levels. They also talk about the important roles of diet and exercise in both preventing and treating diabetes. Testing blood sugar levels, taking insulin and/or other medications for diabetes control, laboratory tests, and ketones and ketocidosis are also important factors for diabetics. The authors discuss practical issues such as sick days, personal hygiene, stress and emotions, and traveling, as well as complications (cardiovascular disease and nerve, eye, and kidney disease). They also include information about developments in diabetes research, forms for tracking diet and blood sugar levels, a bibliography, and a list of organizations and web sites. However, the bibliography and resource lists are almost entirely for English-language materials. The simple language, illustrations, food lists, and recipes make this a very useful book for diabetes patients and their families. Highly recommended for public and consumer health libraries.
