Founder of the Rippe Lifestyle Center, cardiologist Rippe has written extensively about issues of health and well-being. This book presents Rippe’s method for healthy living, which is centered on finding a balance in the areas of nutrition, activity, and lifestyle. In all three areas, he encourages finding a middle ground and using a variety of techniques to determine what works for each individual, within the general context of the recommendations here. The nutritional recommendations are taken largely from the USDA’s “My Pyramid/Mi Pirámide” guidelines and the physical activity from the CDC and the United States College of Sport Medicine recommendations. Worksheets, meal plans, and recipes are included. This book has several drawbacks, the first being that its companion website, www.startmakingchioces.com, is in English only. The book can be used alone, but the web site could make following the plan more interesting. Also, the nutritional information can be fairly sophisticated, which may be daunting to some readers. As always, it is important to follow these techniques under the recommendation of a doctor, since no plan is ever perfect for everyone. Appropriate only for bookstores with a large health and lifestyle section in Spanish.
