K-Gr 3–These titles successfully connect scientific concepts with the everyday experiences. Vivian Vampire, a typical third grader, explores her fascination with bats, discussing facts about their life cycles and addressing common misconceptions (bats are not blind) as she makes friends at her new school. In the second title, Tim and his sister overcome their fear of unknown sounds during a family trip to the country and, in so doing, explore and explain sound characteristics. Supported by colorful full-page illustrations, the texts present a well-balanced blend of engaging narrative, science vocabulary, and facts. The series is likely to hold great appeal for young independent readers and is a solid read-aloud choice. A good addition to school and classroom libraries that serve native Spanish speakers or Spanish language learners.
