Gr 4-6–This is a fantastic voyage through time documenting the most important and amazing architectural feats humankind has accomplished so far, from the grand spires of St Basil's Cathedral to the soaring sails of the Sidney Opera House to the unmistakable silhouette of the Eiffel Tower. Arranged chronologically, the book begins with the most basic dwellings constructed of straw, bamboo, ice, or mud and concludes with the highest skyscrapers and most futuristic buildings, some of which are still under construction, such as the Freedom Tower and Burj Dubai. Dreamy watercolor illustrations and fascinating historical information appear throughout—from the Egyptian Pyramids, the Parthenon, and the Coliseum, to France’s Versailles Palace and New York’s Chrysler building. The text also covers the architects and other pertinent political and religious figures associated with the edifices. In short, this book delivers information in an appealing, inviting manner that will hold the reader's attention. Highly recommended for public libraries, this is also an excellent reference title for older elementary and middle-school classrooms.
