Bush, Laura & Jenna Bush.
tr. by Yanitzia Canetti. illus. by Denise Brunkus. U.S.: Rayo: HarperCollins. 2008. 320. ISBN 978-0-06-156253-2. $17.99.
Gr 1-3–First Lady and former librarian Laura Bush and daughter Jenna dip into the children’s literature field with a compelling story of a typical smart class clown, Tito López, who hates reading. However, the youngster begins to enjoy read-aloud time with his teacher when he becomes interested in one of the stories. He soon develops a love for the characters of this particular book. So much so, that Tito and his friends find themselves searching for a little pig who mischievously escapes the pages of the book. Told in the voice of Tito, with jokes, silly language, and plays on words, this story will connect with the young audience. Canetti’s superb, modern, and straightforward Spanish translation manages to retain as much of the fun language and rhyme as the original version. Brunkus, the well-known illustrator of the Junie B. Jones series delivers bright cartoon-like illustrations filled with wonderful details (older readers will definitely point out the rules posted on the teacher’s wall). Recommended for school and public libraries.
