Hypertension is a common condition that can lead to serious health problems such as stroke or kidney disease if untreated. This book, originally published in German in 2002, provides basic information about high blood pressure. A physician and medical researcher in Germany, Faulhaber begins with an explanation of the circulatory system and how the body regulates blood pressure. He then tells readers about the effects of elevated blood pressure on key organs such as the brain, heart, and kidneys. Preventing and treating high blood pressure is important, and Faulhaber explains the options. Many are simple but require lifestyle adjustments. Eating a low-sodium, low-fat diet that is mostly vegetarian is very helpful, and exercise is necessary. Medication is needed if diet and exercise do not suffice. Illustrations and charts help readers understand the material covered, and a list of associations and a bibliography in Spanish provide further information. This is a useful book for public and consumer health collections with Spanish-language materials.
