PreS-Gr 1–A very tired turtle plans to sleep all winter long. She brushes her teeth, fluffs up her pillow, and gently closes her eyes. But her rest is interrupted by a series of unexpected gifts arriving at the house. Friends deliver a blanket, a cap, and a cake—repeatedly rousing her from her slumber. Sleep comes only after a final caller, a lion, ashamed that he cannot buy or make anything, provides the gift of quiet by standing guard at the door. The rhythmic narrative and the repetition of the turtle’s rhymed nighttime routine will delight young listeners. The oil pastel illustrations bring warmth and texture to the story, and the deliberately skewed perspective on each spread makes the turtle’s head loom large and expressive. This picture book will prove a welcome addition to school and public library collections.
