PreS-K–Baby Felipe is eating a sticky bun at his doorstep when he sees a snail passing by. He crawls after the creature in what soon becomes a journey of epic proportions. The snail “runs on” as Felipe bravely surmounts all sorts of dangers, including bruising brambles and a menacing puddle of water. He crawls on until the animal suddenly disappears behind a curve. Felipe does not have much time to be upset: a dwarf in a clown costume directs him to a present—a book that looks just like the one that the reader is holding. While this nonsensical story feels a little slight, the final spread rewards youngsters with a bird’s-eye view of an intricate garden maze that shows Felipe’s journey. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations, dominated by washed tones of green, blue, and red, give the picture book a distinct vintage look. Enhanced with questions and activity ideas on the back cover, this title is a decent choice for school and public libraries.
