Gr 1+–Intended as a first dictionary, this attractive volume starts by giving young readers simple instructions on how to better find the information they seek. Every entry indicates the part of speech (noun, verb, adverb, adjective, etc.), and the simple, comprehensive definition is followed by a sentence that contextualizes the word, while others include synonyms or references to traditional tales familiar to most children. For example, “asiento” (seat): “noun. A seat is a piece of furniture or place used for seating. I always give my seat to elderly people.” Most of the definitions are accompanied by illustrations, pictures, charts, maps, or photographs, and a number of diagrams serve to label things like parts of the body, the eye, the flower, and different types of clothing. With its large type and clear design, this volume is a great resource for children in the midst of discovering language and the world around them. Recommended for all public and elementary school libraries.
