Malamud (1914–1986) based this novel on the case of Mendel Beilis, a Jewish bookkeeper at a brick factory in Russia accused of ritualistically murdering a Christian child; his conviction was used to justify the country’s anti-Semitic policies. Most of the novel focuses on the adverse life of protagonist Yakov Bok; his mother died within ten minutes of his birth, his father was killed when Yakov was only one year old, and his wife left him for another man. Originally published in 1966, the book won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize and is considered one of the finest books by one of the best American authors; highly recommended.
