Guatemalan author Roberto Díaz Castillo makes a beautiful contribution to Central American letters with this collection of reflections on a life rich in literature, friendship, and art. Currently director of a cultural center in Antigua, Díaz Castillo has held academic and editorial posts and was director of the Editorial Nueva Nicaragua, an important publishing house during the 1980s. The book consists of brief meditations and memories some only a paragraph long and others a couple of pages. They are organized loosely in three sections: on literature and friendships, on art, and on travels. His memories are drawn from a life spanning decades of hopes and disappointments in Latin America. Shaped by exiles and travels, his is a uniquely Central American voice: metropolitan and cultured, tied to the rhythms of life of the isthmus, and anchored in the experiences of his generation. A welcome addition to literature from the isthmus, the book is erudite but not esoteric; shaped by politics, but not strident or overtly political. Imminently readable, the book invites readers to know the world Díaz Castillo has loved. Recommended for larger bookstores and for public and university libraries.
