Gr 4-6-This profusely illustrated volume introduces the major figures and events in Greek mythology. Touching on epic tales and legendary quests, the chapters describe the world of the gods as well as daily life in ancient Greece—rituals, customs, the Trojan War—and the interaction between gods and humans. Tales like the many loves of Zeus, and the adventures of Apollo, Prometheus, and Aphrodite enrich the text and allow readers to learn more about their favorite heroes. At the end of each chapter, the author provides a more comprehensive background for the events using historical facts, illustrations, maps, drawings, and pictures of artifacts. For example, after the chapter on Dionysus, the note explains why music was one of the most important arts in Greek society: how philosophers incorporated it into their beliefs and why playing instruments and having a beautiful voice were considered achievements of excellence. An amusing read, this volume is recommended for elementary and public libraries.
