K-Gr 1-Wonderfully written and softly illustrated, these four stories form a must-buy collection for libraries serving Spanish-speaking families. Baker’s “Te quiero porque eres tú” (I Love You Because You’re You), a story about a baby fox and his mom, is so skillfully translated that the text keeps its rhymes, connects with the illustrations, and preserves a warm maternal voice throughout. Few stories talk about feelings in a way that youngsters understand; this one does so perfectly, making it ideal for storytime or lap reading. Bunting’s “¡Me encantas tú!” (I Love You, Too!), an animal-filled story of babies giving simple gifts to their mothers, is funny and lighthearted; and just right for curious beginner readers. Rossetti-Shustak’s “Te quiero, yo te quiero” (I Love You Through and Through), a short rhyming story about body parts and their motions, is ideal for the active storytime audience. Also, children in large groups will be able to appreciate the large acrylic-and-black-ink artwork; which stands out a bit more than the soft, though equally charming, watercolors that illustrate the other stories. Age appropriate and playful, Stutson’s animal poem “Mamá te quiere” (Mama Loves You) teaches children new vocabulary, including uncommon animal names, using quirky silly rhymes. The artwork, watercolor-and-pencil illustrations, is uniquein each story is unique in stylehildren in small groups will be able to appreciate the large, clear. Highly recommended for all school and public libraries.
