PreK-Gr 2-What’s a doodle? What can children create with them? What happens when you put several of them together? These are some of the questions that artists Van Aerssen and Jaraiz answer using a variety of quick sketches and very simple vocabulary. The first part of the book shows how a doodle can be a person’s hair, a cloud, lighting, a fly, and even a snake; and it then explores what happens when several doodles are put together. Following sections display examples of simple doodles made by children and more complex ones made by four artists, including a sculpture by author Van Aerssen. A series of photographs chronicles doodlelike items in a urban environment; and in the last page, a sentence under the author’s name reads “Signatures are useful doodles.” Full of nonsensical illustrations and bright colors, this book will capture the attention of children who have not yet developed writing or drawing skills. It will spark their imaginations and allow them to notice that they are already creating art. They are expressing their temperaments and feelings through doodles! Highly recommended for bookstores, public libraries, and all libraries that support programs for young children.
