K-Gr 3–This delightful series by an award-winning author covers basic information about the five senses. Rau clearly explains that body parts sometimes play different roles. For example, the tongue is an important muscle used to talk, but it also captures taste and temperature. The tip of the tongue senses sweetness; the back, bitterness. Charming bobble-headed characters demonstrate how the senses work and affect different organs throughout the body. “When a smell is sensed, the nerves send a message to the brain,” explains the text. “Then the brain identifies the smell.” The illustrations show a blind test where a young girl distinguishes the scent of a flower from among other items, such as a previously worn, sweaty sock and a fish. All titles include basic, clearly labeled diagrams that identify the organs involved in the process of sensing, as well as interesting facts (i.e., “The eyelashes keep dust away from the eyes” and “your brain remembers the flavors you have tried”). Key words such as “nerves” and “retina” appear in the glossary, and a short list of recommended readings and the Fact Hound website for further exploration are appended. The translation flows very smoothly and is quite free of regional expressions; and Peterson’s humorous gouache paintings reinforce the meaning of the text. This series is certain to stimulate class discussion and motivate young students to conduct their own experiments. Excellent support material for any elementary school with Spanish bilingual programs and public libraries.
