The political climate in Latin America has changed significantly over the past ten years as several democratically elected presidents have openly espoused Marxist socialist platforms. This trend toward the Left suggests a resurgence of socialist ideas that is supported and encouraged in Kohan’s new book. The author of several books on the Left and a professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Kohan brings here a collection of 19 essays on various topics and four interviews with current Latin American revolutionary figures. For the most part not previously available in book or journal format (though several appeared on the Internet), these work were written over the past five yeas in reaction to current events or for academic purposes. The book struggles to find a central theme, but it does present a call for rejuvenating traditional Marxist ideas in order to support revolutionary activities in Latin America’s sociopolitical environment. Kohan urges a rekindling of the “romantic character” of Marxism, and he suggests that revolutionary socialism is the only possible and realistic means of achieving social equality and political justice in Latin America. This book will be of interest to academic collections on Latin America and socialism.
