HarperCollins has purchased boxer Oscar De La Hoya’s autobiography. The book will be published in English by HarperEntertainment and in Spanish by Rayo and called “American Son” and “Un sueño americano” (An American Dream), respectively.
The autobiography promises to be a “frank and touching memoir” of this living legend. The son of Mexican-born immigrants, De La Hoya is one of the most beloved athletes in America, and one of the greatest boxers of all time. Throughout his career he has defeated over a dozen world champions and won six world titles and an Olympic gold medal. “This is a success story that, in its retelling, can serve as an inspiration for millions,” said editor Rene Alegria, who struck the pre-emptive deal for HarperEntertainment.
De La Hoya has famously achieved the so-called “American Dream”; and in this memoir he touches upon his Hispanic-American identity and how it influenced his perseverance in life. The author discusses his Mexican roots, his memorable fights, the difficulties of being the Golden Boy—a teenager suddenly worth millions—his wild life and gambling habits, his family, and his final personal stability. “The time is right for me to tell the story,” said De La Hoya. “I’ve been through a lot, and have experienced some really amazing events in my life. But I try everyday to keep it all real and in perspective. I think the book will surprise many.”
The deal for world rights was made with Luke Janklow of Janklow/Nesbit, and the book will be published on May 20 of this year.
