Marina (b. 1939) is a noted Spanish philosopher who owes his popularity largely to his keen ability to guide lay readers gently through theoretical concepts and constructs. In the phenomenologist tradition, Marina seeks to “discover the essence of things...by means of analyzing examples” in such quantities that he veers precariously close to the edge of tedium. In the style of the omnivorous intellectual generalist common at the dawn of the last century, Marina draws upon a dizzying array of philosophers, social scientists, and neurologists, among others, to supply the reader with an astonishing quantity of information. This book will undoubtedly find its most appreciative audience among academics, though it might well find its way to the bedside table of the weekend philosopher. A bibliography would have been useful to help the reader in follow Marina’s investigative leads. Recommended primarily for academic libraries.
