It's a formula that appeals to English as a Second Language instructors and students alike: short, high-interest readings explaining facets of the target culture; bold type highlighting key words and phrases, with copious same-page glossary notes defining them in the learner's language; and a handful of quizzes, grammar points, and study tips. Read & Think English offers 111 articles about life in the United States. Its ten chapters deal with food, culture, traditions, travel, history, geography, power and politics, celebrations, business, and notable people. Several of the readings aim to inspire Spanish-speaking ESL students and to promote community engagement. Typical pieces are about 250 words (though many are twice as long) and run with a sidebar that provides the definitions of more than 50 vocabulary items. Since 2002, Second Language Publishing has been producing a magazine for students of Spanish following this pattern, and this new book is a strong entry on the ESL side. The wide-ranging subject matter could prove especially popular with adult students of intermediate and advanced levels. Recommended for libraries, bookstores, and language programs.
