Everyone wants to control weight and eat well. Health writers Huete and Máñez explain how to do this by choosing foods wisely and controlling portions. They discuss the basics of nutrition and metabolism, and explain which foods are best. Complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are digested slowly and help to maintain even blood sugar levels. These should be the basis of a healthy diet. It is best to avoid the empty calories found in sugar, alcoholic beverages, and fast food. Exercise is important, too. The authors provide recipes for healthy dishes and recommend drinking plenty of water and avoiding dairy products. They offer the U.S. food pyramid (1992 version) along with a version created by the Spanish government in 2004. They fail to note that the U.S. Department of Agriculture revised the food pyramid and offered personalized versions of it in 2005 and do not mention the option of low-fat dairy products. Other than these omissions, the guide provides commonsense advice that will be helpful for those watching their weight. The recipes and food pyramids are geared to a Spanish rather than Latin American and Caribbean diet, but the book is still useful for public libraries serving Spanish speakers.
