PreS-K–A young girl describes a simple family scene in this bilingual picture book. She, her brother, sister, and grandmother are playing in the backyard when Mom calls them to the dinner table. Everyone comes in running, the family dog included. Mexican dishes are waiting: “a big pot of beans,” “grated cheese and a bowl of chile,” and “a stack of warm tortillas.” Little sister Tina sees all the food on the table and gets excited. “We’re rich, aren’t we, Dad?” she asks. Dad looks at the faces around the table and all the food they have to share before he answers. “Yes,” he says. “We’re rich.” It is clear that the members of the family appreciate all that they have; and while there is a lesson here, it is not overwhelming. The minimal text is straightforward, and the pleasing, colorful watercolors add to the sweetness of the story. A well-executed, fairly basic yet appealing story, this is recommended for all libraries with Spanish collections.
