Gr 3 Up–The author of The Thief Lord and Inkheart, Funke crafts another gripping fantasy about two young girls that want to become witches. Rosana and Liliana borrow clothing and jewelry from Liliana’s sisters to dress for their parts on Walpurgis Night, the eve of May Day, which is said to be the witches’ Sabbath. Liliana, a beautiful blond, even colors her hair a bright red to make it more witchlike for the ceremony. The two friends meet at midnight to conjure up some magic but, to their surprise, they summoned a real witch, Frieda. A white witch, she does only good magic, and her potions are for things like good luck, folk remedies, and goodwill. A large toad that can turn into a young lady travels with her. The girls become Frieda’s apprentices and embark in a series of adventures and mischief that will have young readers rushing through the chapters. As in her previous works, Funke does her own illustrations—humorous ink drawings that flesh out the ridiculous characters in the story. Recommended for public and elementary libraries.
