Gr 5-7–Originally published in the U.K., these series titles introduce students to the scientific method through hands-on exploration of their immediate world. Each volume presents 10 experiments, all of which are explained step-by-step with the aid of colorful photographs. With emphasis on the importance of sound scientific research and analysis, these activities succeed at making science fun. For example, to study the expansion of gases, students are instructed to make a thermometer by combining cold water, rubbing alcohol, and food coloring in a clear glass bottle; and to explore different types of pigments, they are told to grate a colorful vegetable and mix it with kerosene, melted butter, and other elements, and strain through a paper towel. Heat and Energy explores heat and cold, conduction, temperature, expansion and contraction, conserving and increasing heat, food and energy, pressure, and infrared radiation. Force and Motion covers energy, circular movement and gyroscopes, pendulums, bridge construction, ramps, levers, pulleys, and buoyancy. Everyday Chemistry explores acids and bases, soap, combustion, beneficial metals, absorbent materials, fermentation, starches and fats, enzymes, pigments, and DNA extraction. These clearly translated titles are recommended for school and public libraries.
