Gr 9+–This series of letters written by a therapist Dr. Sachs to his patient, a 16-year-old named Amanda, presents an interesting and believable portrait of a troubled teen searching for help. Each letter addresses an issue common among adolescents–i.e., dealing with parents, sex, or life after high school–and the question that heads each letter foresees the topic. While the author does not include Amanda’s letters, he provides clues to her responses through his replies, which also give insight into her behavior and the motives behind some of her actions, discussing thorny issues like her suicide attempts and spoiled relationship with her family. He notices, for example, that she acts out most when her father is about to leave or has recently come back from a trip. With an uplifting ending, this story could be helpful for teens, and a note for parents, as well as one for teens and professionals, gives tips and suggestions on how to get help. The translation is clear and straightforward, and the tone and meaning of the letters are not lost. Recommended for libraries with a teen Spanish collection.
