Ilegal. (Illegal)

By staff -- Críticas, 10/1/2007

(Spain, 2005) color. Spanish (English subtitles). 107 mins. Venevision Internacional. DVD. $12.98. DRAMA

A reporter, Luis, and a private investigator, Sofía, join forces to find the truth behind a case of human trafficking. Luis and Durán, a fellow journalist, travel to Morocco to get information about illegal immigration from Africa to Spain. When Luis accidentally gets a note addressed to Durán that informs him he’ll be able to get on the ship that will transport illegal immigrants to Spain, Luis’s odyssey begins: he boards the ship instead and films everything. Once back in Spain, everything starts going wrong, and Luis is forced to accept Sofía’s help—even though she was hired by Duran’s employer, the television station that bribed their way onto the ship, to steal his videos—in order to get to the end of the story. Together they infiltrate the world of illegal immigration and find themselves confronted by the people running the smuggling ring and by the police. A good action movie, with a little bit of romance, this is recommended for general collections.—Ruth Sanchez Imizcoz, Univ. of the South, Sewanee, TN
