Gispert, Carlos, ed., et. al.Spain/U.S.: Océano. 2006./n/432p. maps. photogs. ISBN 84-494-3073-9. $82.00 with CD-ROM.
Gr 8+–This up-to-date volume covers both the physical geography and the sociopolitical divisions of the planet. After an introduction that gives an overview of the Earth’s geological formation, each continent is covered by areas. For example, the Americas are examined from north to south: Canada and Greenland; the United States; Mexico and Central America; the Antilles; the northwest portion of South America; the lower western area; the eastern side; and the southern tip. A detailed physical and political map illustrates each section; and information for each country includes: a facts box with basic demographic data and a facsimile of the flag; an historical chronology; physical features; economic resources; and native languages. The abundant text is readable and informative if a bit dry; and the layout is attractive, with well-composed color photographs that give a sense of both city and pastoral life in most countries. A serviceable two-page index leads the reader to a specific country or area. In the easy-to-navigate CD-ROM, a map of a country can be accessed by clicking on the image of the country on the world map; and moving the cursor over a map allows access to various areas for closer inspection. Also, a blank map can be called up and customized to analyze a country’s agricultural and industrial products, as well as tourism. Navigation works smoothly: buttons along the top of the screen allow the user to select written information, maps, the blank map, the flag, and an audio recording of the national anthem. The package is a wonderful purchase for high school, community college, or public libraries.—Ann Welton, Grant Center for the Expressive Arts, Tacoma, WA
