Rovira and Vázquez, endocrinologists specializing in diabetes care and affiliated with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, offer a primer on diabetes that is comprehensive and easy to understand. Using two case histories—Carlos, who has been living with Type 1 diabetes since the age of ten, and José, who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at age 60—the doctors explain all aspects of this disease, from the history of diabetes (the first references to the condition in the medical literature appear in 1553) to an explanation of glucose regulation in the body to diagnosis, genetics, prevention, and treatment. The authors define the two types of diabetes and emphasize the importance of good nutrition, proper diet, and exercise as the basis of both prevention and treatment. They also discuss special situations, such as pregnancy and gestational diabetes, and sum up their discussion with a list of ten important things that diabetics must watch (blood sugar and cholesterol levels, foot care, eye care, etc.). This is an excellent manual for diabetics, those who care for diabetics, and anyone interested in the disease. More current and complete than Controlar la diabetes, this is an excellent addition to public and consumer health library collections serving Spanish speakers.
