Gr 4-6–Featuring the national patriot of Cuba, this title is another keeper in the series that chronicles famous literary figures. Written in four verse stanzas—with eight syllables per line and alternating rhyme—the story poetically mimics José Martí’s own Versos sencillos (Simple verses). The easy-to-read stanzas, which effortlessly introduce children to poetry while telling the story of the young poet’s writing and burgeoning social consciousness, may inspire beyond reading. The firstborn to a large humble family, Martí had to work from an early age. Through an inspiring teacher, the youngster discovered poetry and the meaning of patriotic commitment. Martí’s early contact with poverty and slavery made him resolve to fight injustice. He was first imprisoned and then exiled as a teenager for supporting a Cuba free from Spanish rule. Eventually, he returned to the island to fight and die for his ideals. A one-page biographical profile at book’s end situates Martí historically and geographically. Highly recommended for schools and public libraries.—Gisela Norat, Agnes Scott Coll., Decatur, GA
