From their birth on the assembly line, repeated text lulls readers along with the counting, as the ducks drift past barking seals and singing whales, screeching gulls and gliding turtles. Carle’s distinctive cut-out paper shapes lay over one another to create impressive depths of figures through water, along with scratches and dry-brush-painted textures. One rubber duck tags along with a real mother duck and her ducklings, and to each one’s goodnight “cuac” he replies, with the push-button on the inside back cover, in a heartfelt squeak.
