For Latinos new to the United States, navigating the local school system may be overwhelming. In this small guide, Dabbah—an Argentinean who once headed a textbook distribution company in New York City and started a parent participation program in city schools—addresses basic issues such as registration, the school calendar, transportation, meal programs, grade placement, dress codes, and books. She explains bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs and emphasizes that immigration status is not a factor for enrolling children. Dabbah describes the different levels of education (elementary school, middle school, high school), types of schools (public, private, charter), school curriculums, and standardized tests. She also discusses the issues surrounding the No Child Left Behind Act. The author offers parents tips for helping their children develop skills. She also discusses the rights and responsibilities of parents, describes how to prepare for parent-teacher conferences, and stresses the importance of learning English. This useful and inexpensive book will help families adjust to education in this country. Buy several copies and display it so parents will notice it. Highly recommended for libraries and bookstores.
