On January 21, during ALA Midwinter, noted children’s author Pat Mora helped launch the 10th anniversary celebration of El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Books). About 75 librarians gathered at San Antonio PL’s main branch to honor the annual literacy event, which is traditionally celebrated on April 30th and commemorates children, books, bilingual literacy, and cultures. Members of 2005 Mora Award winner REFORMA de Utah Chapter shared their experiences in building a culture of literacy in Salt Lake City and librarians from Broward County PL, FL, also discussed their work in incorporating Día into their annual book fair. “Hooray for the dedicated librarians who daily share book joy with diverse families and then celebrate by linking all children to books, languages, and cultures on April 30th,” said Mora. “Ten Día years. Amazing!” To learn more about Día and useful resources, including a list of bilingual children’s books, go to
